Grandparents, Monsoons, & Route Climbing

July 13th, 2010

Silas’ grandparents (my parents) were here in town last week, just in time for the start of our desert monsoon season. The rain and humidity along with my parent’s presence were all nice reminders of the eastern states that I miss from time to time living here in the starkly contrasting desert. Without trying to pack too much into a short one week visit, we showed off all of Silas’ new tricks (at least 30 times over), went for nice walks, ate delicious home-cooked foods, swam in the pool and even checked out some local wineries in Sonoita (another blast from the east having grown up near the wine-rich Finger Lakes area in NY). It was quite a relaxing week with an abundance of that good ‘ol “quality time”. And the best part was that Silas sprung his first little tooth on the last day my mom was here in town. Can’t top that.

And so in between the family visiting and the heat and the rain, Paul and I have also managed to train a little bit of endurance, both running and climbing…gearing up for our summer climbing vacation (that has been re-written and revised about 10 times now, at least). We’ve finally made up our minds and decided that since we’re kinda enjoying this route climbing thang, well heck, we’ll just keep doing it! And so, our next post will most likely contain photos of flexing pumped-out forearms attached to a boulderer pretending to be a route climber (for the photo, anyway) high, high above the ground on huge walls of conglomerate cobblestones in…..drum roll, please…..Maple Canyon, Utah!!! See ya’s there, peeps. 🙂

New Tricks

July 1st, 2010

My little bambino is growing like a weed right before my eyes. Lately it seems each day Silas is showing off a new move. The Steamroller, The Bouncy Sit, The Bouncy Stand, The Bouncy Superman, The Table Slap, The Table Lick, The Crib Lick….I could on all day. One thing is for certain, this boy wants to move, move, move and go, go go. I think he’s going to be mobile very soon. !!!!!

Silas’ Soft Food Ticklist

June 10th, 2010

Over the past month or so Paul and I have been experimenting with soft foods with Silas. Each new food – from veggies to fruits to beans – has followed this trend:

First “Huh? What is this?”
Then “Yuck! (paired with a few cute baby-gag-reflexes)”
Next “Maybe it’ll taste good if I make weird faces.”
And finally “Ahhh!!!” (arms and legs flailing and eyes and mouth wide) “This is the best food EVER!!!” “MORE MORE MORE!” “Give it to me!” “AND I MEAN NOW!”

So far the little guy has delighted in bananas, applesauce, peas, carrots, lentils and today, blueberries! Needless to say this kid loves his new soft food treats. And lunchtime for me has never been more fun.

A blueberries first!

The result of arms and legs flailing, eyes and mouth wide, and literally LUNGING at the spoon. I tried to keep him clean. I really did!

Morgan likes lunchtime too

Summertime

June 5th, 2010

105 degrees forecasted for Tucson today. Yep. Summertime has set in. And with the summer temps comes the usual for us: a “break” from hard climbing (and re-setting the woody), work around the house/yard, visits from family, retreats up to the high elevations, and plenty of pool time, grilling and margaritas. Last weekend Paul’s parents flew west for their little dose of Silas. I think we managed to squeeze in most of the above.

Atlanta Trip

May 18th, 2010

We flew to Atlanta, Georgia this weekend for some family time with relatives. And we learned that Silas likes planes. No, really. He really does. Or maybe he just liked getting 4 whole hours of quality mama/dad lap-time. 🙂

Buddies

March 4th, 2010

Silas has a buddy now. His name is Henry. Although Henry has been around since the day Silas was born, Silas has just recently convinced himself that Henry exists. And that Henry is fun to look at. And that Henry brings him bright new toys to play with. And puts the toys close to Silas’ small hands where he can reach. Toys that make sound. I think Silas likes his new friend. 🙂
