Here is another interesting conversation with Silas. This time while riding in the van on our way to Hueco:<\/p>\n

Silas: “Hey Mama. Can I have a nack?”<\/p>\n

Mama: “No.”<\/p>\n

Silas: “Why not?”<\/p>\n

Mama: “Because we don’t have anymore snacks. You ate them all.” <\/p>\n

(We’re constantly battling with Silas over getting him to eat his meals – because he’d rather talk than eat, primarily – but when it comes to anything labeled “snack” he devours and can’t get enough. When out climbing we call the bag that we bring lunch and snacks in the “snack bag” so Silas will usually eat all of the food I bring for him, all of the food I bring for dad AND all of the food I bring for me too! So, I’ve gotten smarter lately and started calling “lunch” a “snack” so that he’ll eat this way at home too. I feel that if we start doing the same with “dinner” though, he’ll be on to us).<\/p>\n

Silas: “Hmmm.”<\/p>\n

Silas: “Hey Mama. I has an ideeeeea. When we get to Wardsburg (Lordsburg, New Mexico), we can buy a nack at the gas tation. They has nacks dare. We jus buy dem.”<\/p>\n

Mama: “No Silas.”<\/p>\n

Silas: “Why not?”<\/p>\n

Mama: “Because I don’t want to spend any money.”<\/p>\n

Silas: “Why you not want to pend any money?”<\/p>\n

Mama: “Because I want to save our money.”<\/p>\n

Silas: “Why you want to save it Mama?”<\/p>\n

Mama: “Because. My birthday is coming up and you and dad need to go buy me a nice birthday present with our money.”<\/p>\n

(It’s quiet for a bit. I’m thinking this is a complicated enough answer that will end the conversation)<\/p>\n

(I was wrong) <\/p>\n

Silas: “It’s ok Mama. You no need to woah-wee about dat. Santa will bring you a present.”<\/p>\n

Mama: “No Silas. Santa doesn’t bring presents on birthdays, only on Christmas.”<\/p>\n

(Slight pause. The wheels are turning)<\/p>\n

Silas: “Yeah. I awe-eady knew dat.”<\/p>\n
