{"id":5102,"date":"2022-09-29T19:19:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T23:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.apadventures.net\/?p=5102"},"modified":"2022-09-26T19:21:20","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T23:21:20","slug":"b-side-adventure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.apadventures.net\/?p=5102","title":{"rendered":"B-side Adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Big mileage, strong kiddos, patient parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;Healthy foods, a good night\u2019s sleep, the right gear.&nbsp;&nbsp;Positive attitudes, endless motivation, words of encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ha!&nbsp;&nbsp;Right, that\u2019s exactly us!&nbsp;&nbsp;Hahahhaaaaa.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consider this post the b-side to all our most recent trail adventures with the kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B-side adventure happens when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>I buy a variety of pre-wrapped snacks for the kids to munch while hiking, and realize them picking out which ones to throw into their packs is the one motivator in getting them to pack their pack the night before without complaints.\u00a0\u00a0\u2026and sometimes the motivator for the hike itself<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Our kids bicker endlessly on the hike over who traded what snack and whether or not it was a fair trade<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Our kids have kicked it into high gear and I\u2019m struggling to keep up and know that\u2019s it\u2019s either because a) they just downed an entire pack of those disgusting energy gummies that are nothing but sugar bombs or b) they\u2019re talking about video games<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Our son complains that his backpack hurts his back and instead of buying him a better pack, I buy myself one so that I can carry some of his stuff when he starts complaining next time<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cBrunch at Barrio Charro\u201d becomes the reward for not turning around before the planned destination is reached<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>One of the kids needs to poop and the trail is too steep and exposed for detours, let alone privacy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>We realize we\u2019ve left the breakfast and post-hike snack bag at home<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A park ranger notices we\u2019ve brought our kids along, strolls past all the near-death looking hikers, and starts asking us questions on where we hiked in from and where we\u2019re hiking to, and then gets very confused upon hearing our response<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>We let the kids stay up way too late the night before because we all want to watch another Mandalorian episode (or three), and then we wake them at 3:45am, drive an hour to the trailhead, start up the trail, and then the youngest one stops dead in his tracks and declares \u201cI don\u2019t want to hike today.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>I can\u2019t let go of the boulder problem i didn\u2019t finish this summer in Durango and so decide that on the way to the Mt. Kendall Adventure, we MUST make a stop at the boulders so that I can send, despite massive protests by the kids.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not that the kids can\u2019t wait to get to Kendall for the big hike, it\u2019s that they can\u2019t wait to checkin to our accommodations and watch some TV.\u00a0\u00a0<br>(And for the record, yes, I sent).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>posted by ARR<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Big mileage, strong kiddos, patient parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;Healthy foods, a good night\u2019s sleep, the right gear.&nbsp;&nbsp;Positive attitudes, endless motivation, words of encouragement.
